Mark Jones

Mark Jones is a professional leather craftsman and designer. What started as a high school hobby became his occupation and obsession. In the late 1980’s after running his first gallery in Newcastle, Mark moved to Sydney to study art and hand crafted shoe making, before relaunching his work internationally. He was one of the first awarded a “Craftmark” by the Craft Council of Australia and went on through their events and promotion to send work to German Design Fairs and to the San Francisco Gift Fair. He assisted the involvement of other Australian craftspeople into US trade shows and set up a joint venture with Austrade between 2000 and 2004. In 2008, Mark built a new studio where he concentrates on design and production. He exhibits at the T’Arts Gallery in Adelaide, sells work to galleries and shops around Australia and travels to the best European fairs for inspiration and research. Mark has been teaching his craft over the past few years enjoying sharing his skills and knowledge.

Some of My Work is Featured Below.

Mark Jones

The wide variety and characters of Australian leathers have suggested their own particular form and character to me. My designs seek to explore and enhance these qualities. I gain inspiration for my leather work by interpreting what the character of the leather suggests to me by its weight, grain, colour or finishing.

Much of my original inspiration for design was stimulated by looking back to the form and detail of classic, antique, functional and fashion styles. I see good leathercraft as standing, on its own as a decorative object as well as being functional.
