Ian Lean

Ian Lean was born in Bellingen, Northern N.S.W. in 1952 and lived in Coffs Harbour until moving to Sydney in 1974. Educated in Coffs Harbour, He was then employed as a Survey Engineer and Draughtsman both in Coffs harbour and Sydney for some 18 years.

From an early age he was interested in landscape painting. He developed a talent for this as a hobby and later received tuition from various professional artists including Allan Fizzell and John Wilson.

In 1989 Ian decided to devote himself to his art as a full time professional. He paints in both oils and acrylics and derives most of his inspiration from the scenic waterways around Sydney and the rural landscapes of N.S.W. Works are produced plein air and in the studio using photographs taken on painting trips and strives to create works of art depicting the conditions and mood of the location at the time.

Ian exhibits in many galleries and art shows and his reputation continues to grow steadily. He has had many solo and combined exhibitions and has won several painting awards.

Paintings range from the popular miniatures to the more traditional larger sizes.

Some of My Work is Featured Below.

Ian Lean

After leaving school in 1970 I followed a career in land surveying, married in 1975, and have one daughter.
After a horse riding accident at 13years old, I started oil painting and developed an interest in landscapes in particular. I renewed this interest in painting again as an adult and had limited tuition from James Wynne, Allan Fizzell and John Wilson, but I am mostly self taught.
I have lived in Berowra, on the northern outskirts of Sydney, for 35 years and I mainly draw inspiration for my paintings from the Hawkesbury River, the waterways of Middle Harbour and Pittwater, the Blue Mountains and country NSW.

Some of my highlights

Cricket, gardening and DIY projects
I derive most of my inspiration from the scenic waterways around Sydney and the rural landscapes of NSW
I enjoy working plein air. However, if this is not possible I work from photos taken during my painting trips in my studio
