Helen MacRitchie
Helen MacRitchie is a textile artist living and working on the North Shore, Sydney. Originally training as a pharmacist in the UK she completed a certificate and Diploma in Contemporary Embroidery and Stitched Textiles by correspondence when she moved abroad.
Since coming to Australia 13 years ago she has developed her work in wool felting and contemporary embroidery to create art wall hangings, wearables and bags, and other accessories. She works from home in her studio but enjoys felting outside when the weather permits or the rather wet nature of the process dictates! Her felting process involves the felting of wool roving using simply heat, detergent, moisture and agitation. Different wools are selected according to the purpose of the article eg. fine merino is used in wearables or coarser Corriedale may be used in bags or vessels. She often incorporates silks and loosely woven cottons in the felting process to add pattern and textural details before further enhancing the texture with hand or free embroidery.
She exhibits and sells her work through the Society of Arts and Crafts Craft NSW Gallery in The Rocks, Sydney and through North Shore Craft Group. Her work has appeared in publications such as “Felt”, nationally and in “Stitch” and “Worldwide Colours of Felt” internationally.
